Creating a Gold Snake Ring with James Cleland

Go behind the scenes with our co-owner and artist in residence James Cleland as he crafts a handmade 14 karat gold serpent ring!

The first step to creating this one-of-a-kind custom serpent ring is to choose the metal. James has chosen 14 karat yellow gold, a soft and malleable metal that is not only beautiful but also is perfect for the curvy design that this ring will have.

If you look closely, you can also see the tiny etches made into the gold to mimic the detail of a snake’s body!

This ring, a custom piece for a client, is special for its curvy design. Using pliers, James creates winding curves of gold.

In addition to being a unique statement piece, these snake rings are so versatile. We chose to set a diamond in the snake’s head, but you may choose any gemstone you like!

As the curves are finished, it is ready for polishing before being set with a gemstone.

After being set with a tiny diamond, it is ready for the client!
